“Jammers must be smart enough to counter threat advances by instantaneously recognizing signals –even if they morph on the fly– and immediately generate the waveforms to effectively jam them,” said Dan Theisen, director, Airborne Electronic Attack at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. “Systems must be able to learn and react during an engagement; true, cognitive EW.”
The future of cellphone jammers depends on how quickly systems can “learn," building on the existing level of information. Raytheon is creating a jammer with more robust algorithms that can deal with unexpected threats.
Most current EW gps blocker use a wider jamming signal across a range of frequencies, whereas BEAM is configured to detect a specific single frequency used by an attacking drone – a solution particularly suited for urban or more populated combat areas.
“A crude jammer might be OK in the desert. Our technology is able to discern one frequency from another. It is built to bring that signal in and match it up with what we have in our library,” CACI Senior Program Manager Jared Salazar told Defense Systems in an interview. “If you are in an environment that already has communications systems, you do not want to jam everything and possibly take out your own communications.”
Perfectjammer’s second product is a DroneJammers drone jammer which jams the communications between the drone and its ‘pilot’. Drone jammers can also be used to track the pilot, making Perfectjammer the “only company in the world offering both drone detection and handheld rifle-style tactical drone countermeasures”.
Many of the newest weapons, radars and high power jammers retain the names of tried-and-true systems. But they’re far from the products of the past, with major improvements in target acquisition, precision and reliability in any battlefield conditions.
AESA technology will bring precision, power and speed to the Next Generation Jammer, an electronic warfare system Raytheon is developing to replace the legacy ALQ-99 jammers on the U.S. Navy's EA-18G Growler aircraft. The jammer will combine powerful, agile beam-jamming techniques with cutting-edge solid-state electronics and an open architecture to allow future upgrades.
